Livia Schweizer – Thirteen encounters
Livia Schweizerin ensimmäinen jatkotutkintokonsertti
For her first doctoral concert Livia Schweizer will present a version of the ’Thirteen Changes’ by Pauline Oliveros collaborating with other six musicians and improvisers.
The ’Thirteen changes’ is a text-based score written by the American composer Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016). The score gives to the performer thirteen poetic and evocative texts that are thought to transform into thirteen musical pieces that are welcoming improvisation and deep listening, encouraging individual and collective imagination.
In Livia’s version, each piece from the score will be explored and performed by various combinations of musicians and instruments, ranging from solos and duos to tutti arrangements. Each piece will serve as an opportunity for every player to delve into diverse ’encounters’ between sonorities, personalities, aesthetics, and musical languages. This approach aims to celebrate the interaction of different aesthetics and individual voices united by a shared score, enabling multiple narratives to coexist harmoniously. For example, what would you do if you would be asked to play a piece about rollicking monkeys landing on Mars?
The first doctoral concert will focus on how a text score used as script, showcasing its ability to initiate collaboration among musicians hailing from diverse traditions. Additionally, it will provide an opportunity for the players to connect with their own embodied musical knowledge and exercise their creative agency.
