An evening of electroacoustic improvisation

Improvisation with acoustic and electronic instruments.

Äänirasia, johon on yhdistetty paljon johtoja.

Electroacoustic music consists of the use of technology to manipulate acoustic sounds. However, by extending the traditional meaning of the word (electro AND acoustic) one can include music made with any combination of acoustic and electronic instruments. During tonight’s concert we will listen to a wide range of electroacoustic possibilities: from modified acoustic instruments to purely electronic or acoustic instruments, in different combinations.

Tonight’s music will be completely improvised. Compared to instrumental free improvisation, performing with an electroacoustic ensemble adds a layer of interaction complexity: not only the performers interact with each other, but each player interacts as well with an electronic system, in addition to the acoustic one, the instrument. Some players will play a purely electronic system, whose results are not limited by the same laws that govern acoustic instrumental practice, creating another layer of interaction when combined with acoustic sources. Finally, some of the electronic instruments can be set to be highly unpredictable, contributing even more to the complexity of the performative situation. However, this complexity is not in itself the goal of an electroacoustic performance. Rather, the desire for the discovery of different interaction possibilities, of different sounds, of unexpected and, why not, uncharted musical territories.

The concert is the final performance of the course in Electroacoustic Improvisation (spring semester), held at the Music and Technology Department of the Sibelius Academy.
