Sibelius Summer Academy 2019
In summer 2019, the Sibelius Summer Academy offered three high-class events in June and August.
Woodwinds @ Sibelius Summer Academy
June 1-8, 2019
Internationally renowned woodwind teachers and the esteemed teachers of the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki combined their forces teaching master classes for woodwind instruments as a part of the Sibelius Summer Academy.

In addition to individual and group lessons, the course included a cadenza composing workshop by pianist Iiro Rantala. Students were offered daily performing opportunities several concerts in the Helsinki Music Centre and in other venues in its proximity.
Organ @ Sibelius Summer Academy
August 1–7, 2019
The first Organ Academy, organized by the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki as a part of the Sibelius Summer Academy, had a special focus on improvisation on silent movies. Visiting international teachers were Peter Krasinski and Balázs Szabó. Students from all over the world were invited to apply for the event, highlighting organ music in its diversity and presenting the high standard organs of Helsinki (such as the Walcker organ of St. John’s, the Cavaillé-Coll style organ of Kallio church) and the Porthan organ in the style of Northern-german Baroque at Janakkala. The participants were offered a detailed picture of Finnish organ culture and the possibilities of studying organ and church music at the Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki. As a part of the Organ Academy, a special Pipe Organ Encounter is organized for teenagers, ages 13-18, who have achieved an intermediate level of keyboard proficiency. Vocal Ensemble @ Sibelius Summer Academy
August 19-24, 2019
One of the world’s foremost vocal groups, Theatre of Voices visited the Sibelius Summer Academy in August 2019. The ensemble visited the Sibelius Summer Academy on August 19 to 24 2019. The course was concluded by a final concert in the Helsinki Music Centre Camerata Hall.
The following members of Theatre of Voices taught in the course:
- Paul Hillier, artistic director of the Theatre of Voices
- Else Torp, soprano
- Signe Asmussen, mezzosoprano
- Paul Bentley-Angell, tenor
- Jakob Bloch Jespersen, bass-baritone
Theatre of Voices was established by Paul Hillier in 1990 in the UK. The ensemble is known for its extensive repertoire of contemporary music, often juxtaposed with early music. Its programmes feature many of the most eminent composers of recent times, including Kaija Saariaho, Heiner Goebbels, Berio, Pärt, Reich, Cage, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen and Stockhausen, while among its current favourite ‘early’ composers are Perotin, Dowland and Buxtehude. During the Sibelius Summer Academy course students will rehearsed and performed classical a cappella ensemble repertoire, ranging from medieval to contemporary music.
