Fundamental Encounters ‒ Georges Didi-Huberman Before the Image

The project aims to shed more light on the points of convergence between the French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman and French phenomenology.

Introduction

In recent decades, the French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman has become one of the most prominent names in image research. However, knowledge of his work in Finland has remained relatively limited. Since my doctoral dissertation (University of Jyväskylä, 2017), Didi-Huberman has formed the crucial reference point for my publications. The project aims to shed more light on the points of convergence between Didi-Huberman and French phenomenology, especially the key concepts used by Gilles Deleuze and Jean-Luc Marion. The aim is also to investigate whether Deleuzian transcendental empiricism could provide a new perspective on the materiality of the artwork. As the title suggests, the objective is to clarify the fundamental encounter with images that Didi Huberman’s thinking opens up.
