Equity in Composing
The Equity in Composing project (2019-) aims to reduce gender-based occupational segregation and to advance equal opportunities for participation in the field.
Introduction
In Finland, only a small minority of professional composers in the field of classical music are women. The gender imbalance can also be witnessed in professional composing studies.
The Equity in Composing project was launched in April 2019 with the purpose of achieving a positive impact in the role divisions, attitudes, and beliefs related to composing within the field of classical music. The research-based developmental project focuses on teaching practices and education in composing.
The Equity in Composing project aims to reduce gender-based occupational segregation and to advance equal opportunities for participation in the field. The project offers instruction and mentoring in composing primarily for female and non-binary participants aged 15 to 20 – but without excluding male participants.
The project also aims to increase gender consciousness and to dismantle prejudices by showcasing the diversity of Finnish composers and their professional biographies.
