Profile image

Tatu Tuominen works as a Lecturer in Printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki. His responsibilities include guiding bachelor’s degree students in their studies and theses, organizing and planning education, as well as contributing to other expert tasks at the university. Tuominen delivers lectures within the academy and teaches printmaking, specializing in collage, screen printing, and computer-aided techniques. As a visual artist, Tatu Tuominen explores the relationship between printed imagery and history. His works are based on images sourced from various repositories, such as books and different photography and print collections. The imagery ranges from 16th-century etchings to modernist architectural plans. In his artistic process, Tuominen transforms the appropriated images into new material forms and contemporary contexts. In this way, his work reshapes narratives of the past. Tuominen believes that art can transform the way we view history and understand its connections to the present. He employs a multimedia approach, including collage, installation, moving image, computer-aided intaglio printing, and cut paper. In recent years, he has created several commissioned public artworks in Helsinki, Lahti, and Turku, ranging from building-sized etchings on concrete to the reprinting and distribution of a book on local history. Tuominen graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. His works have been widely exhibited in Finland and internationally.
