Marja Heimonen

Marja Heimonen (DMus, Docent) is a University Lecturer in music education at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. She directs research studies and is responsible for courses in music education theory and research, research-based teaching project and current issues in music education. Marja defended her dissertation at the Sibelius Academy in 2002, and the dissertation was awarded the German-Nordic DNJV Dissertation Prize. After her dissertation, Marja served as deputy director and researcher in the music philosophy research project Conceptual Foundations of Music funded by the Emil Aaltonen Foundation. As a postdoctoral researcher funded by the Academy of Finland, she worked at the Sibelius Academy from 2005 to 2007, during which time she acted twice as a visiting researcher in the United States at Indiana University Bloomington. Marja has also worked as a researcher in the project Music Education and Cultural Diversity in Swedish-speaking schools in Finland and in the ArtsEqual project funded by the Academy of Finland, which examined the accessibility of art education. In addition, she has worked as a researcher in charge of several research and development projects funded by the Sibelius Academy Development Centre. Marja has been involved in the Nordic Network for Music Education (NNME) and has collaborated with teachers, researchers and research groups. Her research has been published in several international and national scientific journals and anthologies. In addition, Marja has edited the Finnish Journal of Music Education, published by the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and the Finnish Society for Research in Art Education.
