Introduction

Heidi Henriikka Mäkelä (PhD, MMus, title of Docent) is a folklorist at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She also works as a lecturer in folk music at the University of the Arts Helsinki. She specialises in the production of Finnishness and spatiality in contemporary Finland in relation to Kalevala-metric oral poetry and intangible cultural heritage. Her research interests include ICH, folklore, nationalism, cultural appropriation, landscape, spirituality, medievalism, and folk music. Furthermore, Mäkelä has studied the implementation of the UNESCO 2003 ICH Convention in Finland.
