How to apply for the alumni residency at SPACE in London

Scholarship and spaces
The residency, taking place from 14 September to 13 December 2023 is fully funded with the support of Saastamoinen Foundation. The grant covers accommodation, 24-hour studio and equipment access (shared with other artists in residence), general support and curatorial advice, networking opportunities and monthly peer-to-peer sessions led by specialist mentor during the residency. A monthly stipend and a production allowance is awarded to the selected artist for the period in residence. Furthermore, travel expenses to and from London (from within Europe) are funded from the programme. The artist accommodation at Martello Cottage is equipped with an office / studio space. The cottage is on the premises of a larger studio building in Hackney, managed by SPACE.
The selected artist will receive:
- A travel allowance from Finland to UK (500e)
- Accommodation with studio/office space for the duration of the residency period
- 24-hour studio and equipment access
- A stipend of £2250 in total, £750 monthly
- A production allowance of £1000 in total
- Curatorial support and programming opportunities
- General support, advice, studio visits and networking opportunities
- Monthly peer-to-peer sessions, led by specialist mentor
- An artist profile on SPACE website and bespoke online spaces for creating digital work
As an International Incubators in Fine Arts project grantee, the selected artist commits to share his/her processes in the form of a blog or another open digital platform during the residency and talk about the opportunity to fine art students at the Academy of Fine Arts in events agreed upon in advance. The shared material can be used in the final report from the residency period.
Eligibility
MFA graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki may apply for the residency programme at SPACE in London, UK. The residency welcomes emerging alumni and recent graduates of all ages. Students are not considered for the alumni residency.
How to apply
The deadline for applications is 28 February 2023 by midnight (24:00) Finnish time.
Please read about the SPACE residency programme in the call announcement and on the organisation´s web site. To apply, fill out the basic form (link below) and submit the following in one single PDF file:
- A short presentation.
- A proposal for the residency which might include a new project or production to be developed /completed during the residency period: max 750 words (in the proposal, please include a section on how this residency will fit within your practice and why this is a good time for you to be applying for it.)
- Proposal for an artist led workshop to investigate their subject collaboratively.
- Examples of previous work: max of 15 images, 4 video links, sent as 1 PDF file, no larger than 5 mb (please note that referring to website link will not be accepted as previous work material, applicants must send a PDF portfolio). Please include the basic information about each work (year, technique, materials, measures / duration etc.)
- Artist CV
Please make sure that the files can be opened and that all the links to external sites work at least up to two months after the deadline.
Selection process
All applications will be reviewed by an international panel who will create a shortlist of three (3) applicants. The panel is formed by one Uniarts Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts representative and two invited international experts. The final decision will be made by Karen Davies, Head of Artist Development and other members of the selection committee of the SPACE. All applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application within a month after closing the call. We will offer short overview feedback based on the decision-making framework when requested by the applicant at a specified time given when informing about the selection.
