Young Artists of Summer: Olli Moilanen

Take a trip through the depths of imagination in Olli Moilanen’s concert Mielikuvituksen valo (“Light of Imagination”)!

The works in the concert are all related to imagination in different ways, and they are a selected presentation of Moilanen’s chamber music during his studies at the Sibelius Academy. “Suosta” is a minimalist study of the synesthesia of alternating colours created by harmony, like an oil slick on the surface of the mire, from which the music rises slowly.

The piano trio Little Boy And His Airplane is dedicated to Moilanen’s little brother who used to work as a professional pilot. While composing, Moilanen imagined his brother playing with a miniature airplane like the ones he used to make as a child.

Moilanen wrote the Laskostuu cello solo just after his graduation. He imagined the cello’s sound gradually folding like a cloth while the sound gradually fades.

Amfisbaina is a mythical two-headed snake from Jorge Loius Borges’ book of imaginary creatures, which inspired Moilanen with such a strong impression that he wanted to compose it. The clarinet and the saxophone form the vigilant ends of the snake and the cello forms its slithery body.
