Young artists of Summer: Helka Seppälä
The main theme of Helka Seppälä’s “Before the night” concert is getting together and the ritualistic silence while listening to music in the evening.
The concert features a wide range of new music composed for the double bass, both from Finland and abroad.
Performers
- Helka Seppälä, double bass
- Lauri Pekkarinen, percussion
- Janne Valkeajoki, accordion
Programme
- Aho, Haavisto, Stronghold, Autio, Saunders, Saariaho
Concert description
Kalevi Aho’s “Ennen yötä” (Before the night) and Kaija Saariaho’s “Ciel étoilé” (Starry sky), composed for the same ensemble, serve as the framework for the concert. They will create a shimmering night sky over the concert. Between these pieces, Seppälä has compiled a programme that, in its virtuosity, showcases the potential and the vast spectrum of modern double bass and its material.
Julia Wolfe and Rebecca Saunders are among the world’s most popular contemporary composers. Kalle Autio’s commissioned work, “Kolme virusta” (Three viruses), was completed in summer 2022 and will be premiered at the Kumaus festival in Lappeenranta just before the performance at the Helka Seppälä concert in Helsinki. The concert’s slightly exotic ensemble stems from the Kumaus festival founded and led by Helka. The other two artistic leads are Janne Valkeajoki and Lauri Pekkarinen. At the heart of the Kumaus festival is the Kumaus trio, which regularly engages in cooperation and commissions new pieces for the ensemble, creating a new channel in the jungle of new music, even internationally.
I have been absorbed more deeply into the world of contemporary music and found meaningful ways of working as a musician to counterbalance my permanent orchestra work.
