Essi Hirvonen’s concert Pyhät

Pyhät is a thematic concert ensemble with the strong presence of solo double bass music. The concert explores the interface between what can be seen and what cannot, spirituality and silence. The concert’s tonal language is long-lined and austere, stylistically based on an older layer of folk music.

Hirvonen’s minimalist and sensitive tonal language establishes a space for inner silence and calming. Hirvonen composed the music for the concert from 2020 to 2023. The concert ensemble brings multiple senses into play – the sound of double bass is not only heard, but also felt, in addition to which the visuality of playing techniques supports the narrative nature of instrumental music.

The compositions of the concert are dedicated to holy people, such as the patron saint of musicians, the virgin martyr Saint Cecilia and another local saint of the Orthodox Church of Finland, the Holy Martyr and Confessor John of Sonkajanranta. Various sound imitations of orthodox church bells played with a double bass run through the entire concert.
