Concert of the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra
As of 1 January 2024, Helsinki Music Centre finally has the long-awaited organ for its Concert Hall – a hand-built Rieger concert organ.
The highlights of the organ programme for the spring will be the concert performed by the Sibelius Academy’s Symphony Orchestra, in which the organ features in every musical work.
The concert will feature the première of Artturi Rönkä’s Chants, which received an award at the international Kaija Saariaho organ composition competition, as well as Poulanc’s Organ Concerto and Saint-Saëns’s Organ Symphony.
Since 1916, the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra has served as the backbone for training of Finnish orchestra musicians. Its impressive productions also often provide opportunities for the Academy’s young conductors and soloists to show their skills. The orchestra’s artistic director and head of educational content is Sakari Oramo, Professor of Orchestra Education.
In addition to being part of the Symphony Orchestra, students accumulate their orchestral playing skills in many other ways by participating in opera productions and special ensembles for their own musical instrument group, such as the Academy Winds Orchestra and the string chamber orchestra.
The orchestra’s home is the Concert Hall of the Helsinki Music Centre, but it also regularly visits other music halls both in Finland and abroad.
