The Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra: Romeo and Juliet
The Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra’s concert follows in the footsteps of William Shakespeare.
It is possible to draw parallels between the life of the English playwright and that of composer Edward Elgar (1857-1924), such as the fact that both men successfully introduced their home country to international ideas and honed those ideas to perfection. Elgar was an admirer of not only Shakespeare, but also Brahms and Wagner, and he used their means of expression to create a very distinctive musical language. Shakespeare, on the other hand, learned about the story of Romeo and Juliet through a French translation of an Italian song. Sergei Prokofiev’s (1891-1953) ballet is the most famous musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s drama.
The concert will be conducted by Leo McFall, who is an alumnus of the Sibelius Academy and who has, among other things, worked as Bernard Haitink’s assistant and pursued a multifaceted international career. The solo cellist was selected from among academy students by audition.

About the soloist
Daniel Schultz (b. 1999 in Helsinki) has been studying the cello at the Sibelius-Academy since 2018. Before that he studied at the youth department (Junior Academy) with Hannu Kiiski as his teacher. Since autumn 2020 his teacher has been professor Martti Rousi. He started his cello studies with Jonas Franzon at Sandels Music School. In September 2023 Daniel will start his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Daniel took part in the national Turku Cello Competition in August 2022, where he was awarded third prize. He has performed as a soloist for orchestras such as the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Wegelius Chamber Strings and Bulevardin kamarimusiikkiseura (Chamber Orchestra).
Daniel´s instrument is an Italian cello built in 1752 by Giovanni Battista Gabrielli, owned by Svenska Kulturfonden.
Alongside his studies, Daniel has been teaching cello playing at Sandels Music School in Helsinki. In his spare time Daniel enjoys spending time with his friends and singing in Akademiska Sångföreningen, an academic male choir in Helsinki.
