Studia Generalia: French organ music in Finnish church service

Anna Pulli-Huomo’s artistic doctoral degree on church music focuses on Finnish Evangelical Lutheran service, especially through French organ music from the 1800s and 1900s.

Organ music from another church and historical and cultural context has been the musical focal point of the five services that were included in the thesis. In her thesis, Pulli-Huomo has considered the role of the organist in service and the significance of organ music in interactions during the service.

During her lecture, Anna Pulli-Huomo will provide an overview of her research. The music section includes parts of Charles-Marie Widor’s and Jeanne Demessieux’s organ pieces, which are based on Easter and Pentecostal thematic.

Anna Pulli-Huomo, the leading church musician of the Helsinki Cathedral Parish, graduated with a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy in the degree programmes of both church music and music performance. Her teachers included Markku Hietaharju and Pekka Suikkanen. She has also supplemented her studies under the supervision of professor Christophe Mantoux in Strasbourg and Paris. Anna Pulli-Huomo is currently working to finish her doctoral studies in church music at the DocMus Doctoral School of Uniarts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy.
