Relax on a Shaky Ground
Relax on a Shaky Ground is a 9-day exhibition which hosts five live performances.
Yun-Chen reflects on her embodied memory of living in the house where she grew up and the constant transformation of the house she often revisits in her dreams. The railway-like concrete walls in the rectangular house divide the living space into several cells. The building, in contrast, often expands, distorts or reshapes itself into various sites in her dreams.
She brings 15 rectangular foldable tables used in everyday life of the institution into the White Studio of the Fine Arts Academy, a multi-functional site which serves as a white cube and a conference room. The tables float and perform in relation to the architecture, moving images, sound and movement. They become subjects, primary materials and the intersection of kinesthetic, sonic and spatial practices.
She reimagines a living space where hard surfaces become soft, fluid and dynamic. Treating rigid materials gently relates to her embodied experience in dreaming where the concrete structures in real life turn into a series of ephemeral, sensual and transformative scenes. The live performances in collaboration with the jazz drummer Teemu Mustonen and the sound artist Jouni Ilari Tapio experiment on the tables’ architectural, sonic and movement possibilities as well as explore tones and sensations of dreaming.
The exhibition consists of a spatial installation, video footage by the filmmaker Ville Koskinen and an audio library based on Yun-Chen’s dream journals. Each live performance reshapes the exhibition’s spatial constellation and will be replayed as an audio recording on-site.
Please note that admission is free for the exhibition. Please register for the performances beforehand. We kindly ask you to take off your shoes at the entrance of the White Studio. Small rocks under the shoes might damage the floor and tables.
