Northern Cadence: The Sibelius Academy Jazz Ensemble

Sibelius Academy jazz students perform in the online concert.

An ensemble, consisting of students of jazz music from the Sibelius Academy, will perform under the direction of Mikko Helevä in the National Arts Centre’s Northern Cadence online concert series. The Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, the Manhattan School of Music in New York, USA, and the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Canada, have prepared 30-minute concerts featuring their faculty and students performing original and standard repertoire together. There is a 20 minute question period after the concert

The theme of this ensemble was born out of the interest to dig deeper into the early part of the compositional body by Wayne Shorter, one of the most important jazz composers in jazz history. Shorter’s compositional style has evolved over the course of his long career and, therefore, it is enlightening to know where it all began. The repertoire includes his compositions from the years 1959-1964, before his classic Blue Note recordings and membership in Miles Davis’s quintet. During these years he played and recorded with Art Blakey’s band. He also recorded his compositions on three albums of his own and on a few recordings by other jazz musicians. All the compositions in this concert are from the albums of Art Blakey.
