Exploring the inherent fragility of a material long revered for its nobility and endurance, From Sculpture to Cloud delves into the inevitable degradation and transformation of marble.
Through extensive research into acts of iconoclasm inflicted upon La Pietà and David by Michelangelo, the artistic outputs expose the fractures left by the hammer blows, along with the scattered fragments and minuscule particles of marble dust released upon impact.
Some works integrate diagnostic and restoration procedures, whilst others employ unique techniques –such as printmaking with pulverised marble or hammering a pencil onto paper– to further elaborate on the changes within the crystalline structure of the Renaissance sculptures, revealing them as intrinsically unstable, with their own agency.
By shifting the focus from solidity to suspension, From Sculpture to Cloud reconsiders stone through a long process of continuous transformation, dissolving permanence into an evolving state of disintegration.
