Matei Gheorghiu – Discontinuity as a Constructive Tool

Matei Gheorghiu’s doctoral concert

Photo: Octavian Balea

Matei Gheorghiu’s research started from the hypothesis that in order for music to hold together, to have unity, there must be elements that create continuity. Only through continuity unity can be achieved. But elements that create discontinuity are also welcome as long as they don’t become destructive.

In Gheorgiu’s only doctoral concert, various aspects of this quest for constructive continuity at different parameters such as rhythm, melody, thematism, dynamics and others are explored through 7 works.
