Lapsody: Paramatter

The 8th International Live Art and Performance festival

A mosquito on water and a buoy.

Remote, around, on, in, inside, around, skip.

To overlap, to overlap but not to take over. The 8th International Live Art and Performance festival Lapsody moves through the Helsinki landscapes and islands. The festival finishes when we arrive and starts when we leave.

A festival on a boat: movement as a position. But, where is the body?
Co-curated by a boat, Tea Andreoletti, Dasha Che, Fjolla Hoxha, Kuninkaansaari island, Minerva Juolahti and Suvi Tuominen.

15 minutes sound piece.

We want to bring the sounds of the island to the places which they rarely reach, to create new connections of care and cohabitation. What could the island soundscape share with us? The islands, the sea, the land, the other-than-human beings, the human inhabitants – an entanglement of living sounds.

16:30-17:00 Tea Andreoletti – Forgetting by Remembering

on the JT Line ferry from Kauppatori to Vallisaari

Can a memory allow us to forget? So that water becomes air, the island a mountain and navigation a flight? Forgetting by Remembering is an imaginary journey of memories that leave the mind to return to the heart.

Dimenticare [to forget] in italian, means to take out of the mind.
Ricordare [to remember] in italian, means to return to the heart.

The event is wheelchair accessible.

17:00-18:45 Lukasz Jastrubczak – Open Form

from Vallisaari harbor to the barn

Reproach Of A Stone is a workshop based on a visual game that was conducted in 1971 in Poland by Oskar Hansen and his students, according to the ideas of “open form”. In the game there are two groups formed around two opposite identities (e.g. spirituality/rationality, individuality/collectivity, nature/culture). One group communicates with the other without words, arranging only simple materials such as sticks, fabric, string. The participants of each group can choose a way in which to decide what should be communicated to the opposite group. They can talk about it, use intuition, or telepathy.

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

18:50-19:25 Daria Apakhonchich – Free Time

at the barn

Daria Apakhonchich, a feminist activist artist based in St.Petersburg, Russia, addresses labor, capitalism, ecology and rest in her 30-minute participatory performance piece. The artist will be present online.

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

19:30-20:00 Dmitri Zherbin

at the Kuninkaansaari beach

Dmitri Zherbin is a Helsinki-based cassette-loop-noise-artist. On Kuninkaansaari island he will present a piece that utilises the sounds of the environment as well as sounds produced with self-made junk-rattles.

Site-specific sound performance. The performance is not wheelchair accessible.

20:30-21:00   Minerva Juolahti – Remembering by translating

JT Line ferry from Vallisaari to Kauppatori

How to translate distance, how to translate a movement. Remembering by translating in four parts: sound, line, word, motion. The piece examines remembering as a corporeal translation, a transition between points in space.

Site-specific sound performance. The performance is wheelchair accessible.

For this performance audience members are asked to bring with them a fully charged device with an internet access, and headphones.

Thursday 17.9.

10:00-16:00 Jana Unmüssig and Fransisco Trento – Walking Together on Questions on Higher Art Education

From Publics (Sturenkatu 37-41, 00550 Helsinki)

Registration needed. Register to Thursday’s event.

Walking Together on Questions on Higher Art Education is a performative walk for one person, guided by Jana Unmüßig and Francisco Trento. Picking up on Aristoteles’ Peripatos, where thinking and walking went hand in hand, Unmüßig and Trento invite you to walk and think-in-speaking with them. Each walk will take about 45 minutes, from Publics to Rautatientori, and the last one will end at Kauppatori.

Organised by Publics and Another Academy. The event will be in English. The event is wheelchair accessible, because the walking path will be chosen based on participants’ needs.

16:00-18:00 Jeff Benjamin – Archipelogy

at the Living Room in Kauppatori, open access

Archipelogy is a prose poem accompanied by a group of anthotype prints. Anthotypes are photographic prints which use chlorphyll as a photosensitive emulsion — in this case, spinach. As a medium, the anthotype is transitory and fleeting, a quality that I felt was somehow appropriate when contemplating the delicate nature of Kuninkaansaari as well as the other islands of the Helsinki archipelago and the world itself.

The event will be in English. The event is wheelchair accessible.

18:00-20:00 Masha Lukianova and Tonya Melnyk – Wedding #5

meeting point at Kauppatori JT Line platform

Registration needed. Register to Wedding #5.

Wedding #5 is a highly participatory performance-celebration of imaginary anarcho-feminist queer futures in a form of a utopian wedding trying to escape both the reality of autocratic repressive regimes of Eastern Europe and neoliberal capitalist politics of the West. The artist duo, Tonya Melnyk and Masha Lukianova, based in Kyiv, Ukraine, will be present online, while the audience will join live on the wedding boat.

For this performance audience members are asked to bring with them a fully charged device with an internet access, headphones, and a powerbank, if possible. The audience will get the link to a secure Zoom meeting before the performance. There will be alcohol served during the performance.

The event will be in English.

The event is generally wheelchair accessible, although some performance spaces are not.  For a comfortable accommodation, please, contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English), when registering for the event.

20:00-20:30   Hanais Nun group – The heart of Sexmeteli

at the Living Room in Kauppatori, open access

Hanais Nun group will perform a purification gig. The myth goes – of course – that the performative band is originally from Hanai’s Paradise Islands and fall to earth to play purification performances. A fiction that is meant to purify the hard reality, without forgetting a very serious, absurd humour. Hanais Nun is a group formed by artists based in Helsinki. They combine interdisciplinary art with alternative music and storytelling. They work community-based so that all the members are free to bring their visions to the playground.

The event is wheelchair accessible.

Friday 18.9.

12:00-14:00 Publics: The already Not-Yet – Becoming Collective

Artists: Ima Iduozee, Iida Nissinen, Joy Mariama Smith, Vishnu Vardhani, Jeanne van Heeswijk.

at Publics (Sturenkatu 37-41, 00550 Helsinki)

Registration needed. Register to Friday’s event at Publics Helsinki.

A tentative exploration on ‘commitment’ and how to share our realities in times of breakdown. How can we create different relational bonds to approach the notion of collectives not as a pre-existing social structure but as a learning process actively becoming in context. This is to start developing and enabling a series of participatory test sites and public scenarios to enact and imagine how we live together and define collective futures.

The event will be in English. The event is wheelchair accessible.

15:30-15:55 Dasha Che – Future Parts: What Happens When It Stops

at the living room at Kauppatori, open access

This body-based work is a maze of movements and thoughts on object to self, object to object relationships, agency, misfires and in/complete connections while living in precariousness and losses of the contemporary world of late capitalism.

The event will be in English. The event is wheelchair accessible.

Events at Kuninkaansaari on Friday 18.9.

For Friday events the audience members are asked to bring with them their own cups and a fully charged device or, ideally, flashlights.

Registration needed for the whole day. Register for Friday’s programme on Kuninkaansaari.

16:30-17:00 Traces of Laps – Things, Intimacies, Interventions

on the JT Line ferry from Kauppatori to Vallisaari

The residue of several artworks by Lapsody co-curators artists intermingles and re-assembles during this boat ride to emerge as a temporary and unstable art event.

The event is wheelchair accessible

17:15-17:40   Suvi Tuominen – “…with a blank, a root, a shovel and rust.”

at Vallisaari-Kuninkaansaari bridge

No standing still, no landscape, but in between times. Space bending in perception, a barrel breaking down with each touch, the pasts erupt, and the pressure of the future is felt on bulletin boards. With a blank, a root, a shovel and rust I bend the time of performance and gaze at Kuninkaansaari.

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

18:00-19:00 Swedish Acting Program – Acting inside of the catering regime

To what extent is this island an escape? The exercise happens on an island, far away from the Theatre Academy but, at least partly; still within the realm of its authority. The experience offers an opportunity to digest an argument of ideological immanence together, and to share reflections on possible routes of escape in the spirit of cultural commons. The walk-and-talk performance departs from the article “The catering regime” by Pascal Gielen and Paul DeBruyne from Teaching Art in the Neoliberal Realm: Realism versus Cynicism (2012).

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

19:30-20:00 Dylan Simon aka The Borderlander, Reid Barber, Fjolla Hoxha – Things Other People Do

at the bunker

Things Other People Do is an interactive video piece imagining state sponsored single channel television programming from the United States. Comrade Simon will be appearing as his persona The Borderlander who is an irreverent industrial musician and performer. The piece is designed to blur the lines between video and reality through commands with a militaristic and religious fervor, violence and instability. There will be an in person “enforcer” performed by Fjolla Hoxha who will demand submission from the audience with force and bondage. Participation is mandatory.

Contains performatively forced physical interaction and is politically incorrect.

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

20:00-20:15  Fjolla Hoxha and Jesse Weilburg – Double Dare

“ . . . the infinite cannot be made into matter, but it is possible to create an illusion of the infinite: the image.” Andrei Tarkovsky

A single song concert inspired by Bauhaus’ opening tune for ‘In The Flat Field’, sang to an abandoned bunker.

The procession from Things Other People Do continues through a dark path brightened by your lanterns. A tour of remnants from Kuninkaansaari’s bunkers. Not everyone will have space to see, but the echo will linger…

For this performance audience members are asked to bring with them a fully charged device or ideally, flashlights.

The event is not wheelchair accessible.

20:30-21:00 Finissage

Alcohol and non-alcohol drinks will be served, bring your own cup.

The event is wheelchair accessible only from a certain location since the terrain of the path toward the event is uneven. For more info, please, go to the island accessibility page and contact Dasha Che at dasha.che@uniarts.fi (English).

21:30-22:00 JT Line ferry from Vallisaari to Kauppatori

Saturday 19.9.

14:00-18:00 (EET) Another Academy – Before and After the Educational Turn

A discussion at Publics (Sturenkatu 37-41 4b, 00550 Helsinki) and online (Zoom). Registration needed. Register to Saturday’s event at Publics.

Many radical initiatives have addressed the twin subjects of art and education in recent decades, often posed as alternative modes of learning to those present within the neoliberal academy. The Another Academy seeks to bring together international artists, art teachers, professors and students to share local experiences and strategies to assess possible forms of resistance to commodified forms of contemporary education.

The Another Academy take place in ‘translocal’ contexts, both to remember and reimagine “the groves of academe” as a space of exchange.

We have asked six 10-minute provocations from the following people: Gavin Butt (University of Northumbria), Jeanne van Heeswijk & Joy Mariama Smith, Łukasz Jastrubczak (The Art Academy of Szczecin, Poland), Gudskul (Jakarta), Anders Carlsson & Aune Kallinen (Uniarts, Helsinki) and LAPSODY (LAPS MA students).

The preliminary question for the discussion is, that when the Another Academy takes place in translocal contexts, yet, it is the global deregulated markets and the neoliberal politics or policies that determine — often violently — the conditions for education, artistic practice, or distribution and circulation of knowledge.

What kind of strategies, practices, forms of revolt or methods you would like to share for our common discussion?

Organised with Publics and Another Academy.

The event will be in English. The event is wheelchair accessible.

The festival is part of Uniarts Helsinki’s Saari 2020 (Island 2020) programme on Kuninkaansaari island.

Changes may apply.
