Leena Julin – Sonic sanctuaries
The first artistic component of Leena Julin’s doctoral research
Could Christian tradition offer facilities to just be? For anyone, regardless of world view?
Can one find true content in religious words without sharing the dogma built on them?
The first artistic component of Leena Julin’s doctoral research is wondering how to be present in this world, swaying between transience and eternity. The question is if there are in Christian tradition elements or aspects that can offer a present-day, possibly secular person an environment or setting that enables them to be present (or simply, just be), as well as a setting to contemplate on concepts like eternity, holiness, or divinity without added dogma.
Being inspired by the meditative traditions, especially singing and chanting in monasteries, Julin is searching for (sonic) forms which create a space of being, without doing, performing, or even the thought of linear time or time passing by. Instead, the focus is on presence, perception, and awareness. Julin has named these spaces sonic sanctuaries.
The musical idea is to move from performative music-making to listening-based music-making. The happening is not actually a concert, as it is not about producing or executing something. It is a joint sonic space.
This artistic happening is part of Julin’s research which aims to find recognizable elements – shared humanity – in Christian tradition regardless of beliefs, as well as show some of the distancing content that divides or excludes people. These aspects are being translated with and through art.
Welcome to just be!
Doors open 18:30 for voluntary pre-reading before leaving the linear time.
