Lecture Series on Music of Our Time
Lecture series on music of our time consist of visits of composers and other artists discussing their practice, works, and questions related to these.
Five public lectures are held in the auditorium of Helsinki Music Centre on Thursdays at 1:15 to 2:45 PM.

Lotta Wennäkoski: violin concerto Prosoidia
Composer Lotta Wennäkoski, awarded Finland’s State Prize of Music in 2020 presents her new violin concerto Prosoidia (2022-2023). The concerto commissioned by BBC was premiered by Ilya Gringolts and BBC Symphony Orchestra in Barbican, London, in November 2023.

Walter Sallinen and Klaus Maunuksela: Installation work Matrix of Modernity
An hour-long installative sound work Matrix of Modernity (2024) was premiered in July 2024 at the Time of Music Festival, Viitasaari.
Klaus Maunuksela is a Helsinki-based dramaturge, writer, and artist-researcher who works in the fields of theater, contemporary music, and literature.
Walter Sallinen is a Helsinki-based composer and sound artist whose artistic practice explores the potential of interdisciplinarity both as a compositional tool and as a key for unforeseen collaborative concepts.

Anna Hakula: Sound in space – multidisciplinary practice
Composer and sound artist Anna Hakula discusses her multidisciplinary projects and collaborative work. Hakula’s educational background (architect and music pedagogue) is evident in her interest in spaces, places, and audience experience.

Matthew Whittall: symphony for orchestra and organ JOY
Composer Matthew Whittall discusses his symphony JOY for the FRSO and the new organ of the Helsinki Music Centre, premiered in May. Whittall’s prolific output covers a wide variety of genres, particularly orchestra, voice, chorus, chamber and solo instrumental works. He teaches composition and orchestration at the Sibelius Academy.

Matei Gheorghiu: Uuno Klami finalist piano concerto From the Village of Nowhere and other new works
Composer Matei Gheorghiu talks about his piano concerto that made into the finals of an international composition competition and works of his doctoral concert, organized on Saturday 23rd November. Born in Bucharest, Gheorghiu teaches music theory in Kankaanpää Music School and is pursuing an artistic Doctor of Music degree in the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki.
