Tenho um compromisso com pesquisa artistica* – a colleague to come

Artistic research is often thought of in terms of a combination of art and research. Does this imply some form of compromise, a consent to arbitration, or even a choice in favor of the one at the cost of the other? Does artistic research practice imply a positioning in relation to the overlapping but at the same time distinct fields of art and research? What if art and research were understood in terms of retroactively identified foci of one elliptical movement? What if a compromise were understood as a commitment, a com-promise, a simultaneously shared promise? What if the question of positioning would turn into a question of appointment or rendez-vous?

 * Compromisso in Portuguese (and compromiso in Spanish) can mean both ‘appointment’ and ‘commitment’.

You must register for the onsite event at the White Studio. The deadline for registering is Wednesday 11.12.2024. The events maximum capacity is 30 persons. Register here

BIO
Vincent Roumagnac
I am a Helsinki-based Basque-French artist and researcher, born in Biarritz. I began in theater, initially as an actor and later as a director. However, I moved away from straight theater practices and modes of production, focusing instead on how theatricality evolves in response to climate urgency and technological advancements, within what I have coined a discipline-fluid methodology. My artworks merge visual, installation, and performing arts, and are rooted in intervention and site-sensitive ecologies. In 2020, I completed a Doctorate in Arts at Uniarts Helsinki, with the artistic research project Reacclimating the Stage. Since then, I have conducted the post-doctoral projects Data Ocean Theatre (2021-2024) and Stages of Flower Power/s (2024-2027), as a visiting artist researcher at the same institution.

Mika Elo
Since 2015 I work as professor of artistic research and as the head of the doctoral program in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki. In 2019–2022 I worked as the PI of one of the research projects in the consortium Post-digital Epistemologies of the Photographic Image. In 2012–2013 I co-curated the Finnish exhibition Falling Trees at the Biennale Arte 2013 in Venice. During 2018–2019 I was working as co-convenor of the Research Pavilion #3 and I was part of the core organizing team of the Research Pavilion #5. I have also been a member of the editorial board of some journals, such as RUUKKU (2012– ) and JAR (2010–2019) over many years. My research interests include theory of photographic media, philosophical media theory, and epistemology of artistic research. I am participating in discussions in these areas in the capacity of curator, visual artist, researcher and educator. My most recent research focuses on expanded writing and ecology of practices.

Forum Box (Ruoholahdenranta 3 A, Helsinki)
Näyttelyn avajaiset – Opening evening: 12.12.2024, at 17-19

The video installation Tuhkimontie 10 depicts the renovation of a 1950’s apartment building in an Eastern suburb of Helsinki. The 10-channel video work follows views from the interior to the exterior in four apartments for the duration of two years. Weather and seasons change outside as the renovation progresses inside. The work examines the framing of environment provided by an architectural structure. The exhibition is an artistic component of Salla Myllylä’s doctoral studies.
