Voice is Voices, a sound installation opera
An operatic installation about voice and identity, Voice is Voices is the concluding artistic component of Miika Hyytiäinen’s postgraduate degree. The work brings the voice and opera closer to the audience than anything before.
Voice is Voices is an operatic installation about voice and identity, featuring mischievous fairytale characters, sisters who invent their own language, an overture by four coloratura sopranos, and the growth of one voice into a range of genders, emotions and desires. Combining different styles, references and bodily experiences, Voice is Voices brings opera and song close to the audience.
Most of the composed material is based on references from operas and other existing literature adapted for a new setting. The heartfelt message is that everyone can influence their voice and identity.
The work is presented mainly in English, but it also features references and worlds of other languages, including Finnish, Swedish, German, Italian and French.
