Harri Saarinen – Joseph, Messiah, Moses, and Piano
Harri Saarinen’s first doctoral concert Joseph, Messiah, Moses and Piano: 200 years of Biblical piano music
“There are moments when, if I had to start my life over, I would like to compose the entire Bible, from the first word to the last,” wrote Charles-Valent Alkan to a friend on Thursday, 3 January 1861.
The Bible has been a source of vocal music, from recitations in synagogues all the way to oratorio and opera, but it has also inspired a large volume of instrumental music. The concert opens with a series of works from over a 200-year period in which the people, places, events and moods of the Bible are manifested in music, interpreted by a single instrument – the piano.
