Global Fest: Lullaby for Mariupol by Opera Aperta
Requiem for destroyed city
Meet the artists session will be held after the concert at the Ground Foyer.
On February 24, Russia openly invaded Ukraine, continuing its war and genocide against the peaceful people. Mariupol, which since 2014 has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, has become a brutal example of tragedy and humanitarian catastrophe. Terrorist forces of the Russian Federation with the help of bombs and aircrafts were trying to wipe out the city and its inhabitants from the face of the earth, bombing homes, hospitals and schools.
On February 22, back then in peaceful Kyiv, Ukrainian composers Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko composed a piece for microtonal bandura, called “Mariupol”. On the 21st day of the invasion and inhuman destruction of Ukraine, they performed “Mariupol” in the form of a 7-hour composition-installation on March 16.
In May 2022, together with the artists of Opera Aperta the piece was transformed to concert video-vocal-instrumental performance “Lullaby for Mariupol”, that combines microtonal string instruments with traditional Ukrainian Lullabies from different regions of the country. This version was performed in Vienna (WUK, Musiktheatertage Wien), and Rotterdam (O. Festival, Schouwburg), and later during Triennale Milano and Festival Arc Electronica in Linz.
The creation of this version “Lullaby for Mariupol” started with students of the Global Music Department of Sibelius Academy during residency in Kallio-Kuninkala in October 2022. Performance will include a unique combination of detuned string instruments (Guzheng, Kantele, Santoor, Qanun, Bandura) as well as instrumental and vocal elements from Ukrainian, Finnish and Middle Eastern traditional music.
“Lullaby for Mariupol” is composed as a requiem for a destroyed city. Video materials, interpreted live by ukrainian video-artist Dmytro Tentiuk combines documentary footage, made by citizens of Mariupol, and published on telegram channel Mariupol Now, fragments of mosaics by Alla Horska, and documentary videos filmed in Mariupol by Ukrainian artist Olia Mykhailiuk.
The performance is dedicated to all victims of russian aggression.
