Global Fest: Arabic Ensemble and Haneen Choir
Students of Arabic music perform together with Haneen Suomi choir
Arabic music ensemble is a global music ensemble where students learn to play and understand the repertoire of traditional Arabic music from the eastern Mediterranean region.
Haneen is Arabic and means longing. The choir mainly sings traditional Syrian songs, but its activities extend beyond singing: the choir strengthens friendships, promotes social interaction, provides psychological support, and relieves tension caused by life crises. Singing evokes strong emotions and helps one navigate life. The activities assist Arabic-speaking women in integrating into society. We believe in the power of the group, so the Finnish Haneen choir is part of a network of Haneen choirs that sing around the world, unite people, and help them survive everyday life as women; mothers, daughters, daughters-in-law, and human beings.
In this concert, the students of Arabic music ensemble will perform some pieces that they have been working on as part of their ensemble studies and will perform together with Haneen Suomi choir some Syrian folk songs that is part of the choir’s repertoire. All the repertoire of this concert is based on Maqam Rast family.
