DIG. 2024: Sarah Hanahan Quartet
Sarah will play a special concert in the DIG.-festival with a stellar line-up.
Sarah is a rising star jazz saxophonist in New York City. She came to the scene via the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music and the prestigious Juilliard School. She has had the privilege of studying with some of the greats of our time including Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Billy Drummond and Marc Cary.
“Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, and René McLean not only taught me how to play and the dedication it takes to be a real musician, but they taught me what music really is about. They taught me what music means and the heaviness every note carries. They stressed the importance of culture, spirituality, and knowing the tradition,” she reflects.
Recently, Sarah has been working with many renowned musicians including Jeff “Tain” Watts, Nat Reeves, Peter Martin, Steve Davis, Billy Hart, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Moran, Marc Cary, Doug Weiss and Aaron Goldberg. Sarah is an active performer in the New York jazz club scene with her own quartet and in addition to her own projects, she tours both nationwide and internationally with many different top-notch groups, like the great Joe Farnsworth Quartet and the Grammy award-winning Mingus Big Band to name a few.
Hanahan released her debut album Among Giants in June 2024. The album features a powerhouse rhythm section of Marc Cary, Nat Reeves, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. Jazz at the Lincoln Centre writes about her album:
“Sarah Hanahan’s debut album Among Giants showcases her raw talent, her unique voice, and her deeply felt, instantly memorable compositions. The album also demonstrates why she’s the heir to a jazz tradition she’s long revered, teaming her up with a band of legends who’ve helped nurture the young lion’s burgeoning career.”
