Liturgies
A concert by the Sibelius Academy Vocal Ensemble and choral conducting class.
A century separates these two masterpieces of sacred music from the northeastern corner of Europe. Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his setting of the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom in 1910, but it was rejected by the Orthodox clergy and only gained acceptance into the concert repertoire in the late 20th century. Einojuhani Rautavaara composed his Missa a cappella in 2010–2011, basing it around a Credo he had written almost forty years earlier. The Sibelius Academy Vocal Ensemble is the professional instrument used by the Academy’s choral conducting class.
The concert is part of the Nordic Conference for Choral Conductors’ programme. The conference will take place in Musiikkitalo, Helsinki 4-6 October 2024 and is organized by the Finnish Choral Conductors’ Association in collaboration with the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. The second concert in the seminar programme, Northern Voices, will take place in Temppeliaukio Church on Saturday 5.10.2024 at 19.00. More information: www.helsinki2024.fi
