Watch a free live stream of the concert
A separate degree programme in folk music was established at the Sibelius Academy in 1983. This academic year will mark 40 years of playing, singing, studying and dancing to folk music, and already for ten years as part of UniArts Helsinki. The programme has contributed to the preservation and development of folk music traditions in Finland and has resulted in the creation of a whole new professional community of internationally renowned folk music professionals. Today’s folk music brings together a living cultural heritage and personal artistic identity.
The degree programme in folk music will be celebrating its 40th birthday in February 2024 with a jubilee symposium of folk music researchers and this festival concert, which will feature students, graduates and teachers of folk music. The concert culminates with a performance by SibA Folk Big Band, who will also announce the release of their third album.
