Uniarts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy will organise the Helmi Vesa Piano Competition for its students once again in March 2023. The competition is open to those students who study piano as their major subject at the Sibelius Academy’s Faculty of Classical Music and who have not yet completed a master’s degree as well as to students studying at the Junior Academy. Competition applicants must be registered as attending students. Students who have previously been awarded prizes in the competition on three separate occasions during their bachelor’s or master’s studies are no longer eligible to compete in the competition.

Competition repertoire

The duration of the repertoire is 30 minutes, and it must include the following:

  1. A minimum of 5 minutes of music composed after the year 2000 by a Finnish artist or an artist living in Finland. The repertoire can be performed with sheet music.
  2. Free-choice repertoire, which must include pieces by one or several of the following composers:
  • Lili Boulanger
  • Nadia Boulanger
  • Emmanuel Chabrier
  • Cécile Chaminade
  • Gabriel Fauré
  • Charles Koechlin
  • Francis Poulenc
  • Florent Schmitt

The free-choice repertoire must be played from memory.

Prizes

Competition winners are awarded cash prizes, and the amounts of the prizes are determined by the jury.

Performance order

The order of performances will be decided by a draw.

Registration

Registration time to the competition is 16.12.-31.1.2023. The registration is to be done in MUVAC system. After registration, changes in the competition programme can be done until 24 February 2023.
