What are path studies?
Path studies refer to studies that have been completed at the Open University and that can be used as the basis for eligibility to apply to a degree programme in a separate admissions group. Credits for the studies will be transferred to the student’s degree. Successful applicants are expected to have completed the path studies, and they must also meet other application criteria of the degree programme.
You can check your Open University credit status in the Peppi student information system if you have a valid uniarts username. You can also ask about your completed studies by email at open@uniarts.fi. Completed studies are valid for a maximum of ten years.

Path studies at the Open University
The aim of path studies in early music is to learn about the performance practices of early music through individual instrument teaching, ensemble playing, various theory and history courses and a seminar. The path studies consist of instrument studies (15 cr) and complimentary studies (15 cr).
Instrument studies (15 cr)
You can apply to our programmes through Finland’s joint application process on Studyinfo.fi. The application period for 2022 ended on 19 January 2022. The next application p
Instrument studies (15 cr) consist of one-to-one lessons that are completed within one academic year (four 60-minute lessons within an academic term) and independent work by the student.
The student delves into the technique, expression methods and repertoire of their period instrument. After the studies, the student may choose to complete a level performance examination or a minor subject degree.
The application period for instrument studies is scheduled for April every year at the time of the Open University application round. Students apply for the studies by submitting an unedited 5-minute (approximately) video recording that they have filmed in one take. The free-choice repertoire of early music must be performed on a period instrument. Sheet music can be used when playing the instrument. Works requiring accompaniment are performed with an accompanist, if possible. About 3–5 students are selected for instrument studies each year. Applicants receive information on admissions results in June.
Complementary studies (15 cr)
Students can pick and choose the courses that they find most interesting and useful for improving their competence from the yearly selection of the degree programme in early music. You can find the selection of early music studies in the Open University course calendar. Go to the course calendar here.
Students can apply for complementary studies twice a year during the Open University application round. Students apply for each course separately, and participants are selected based on a free-form motivation letter where students explain why they are interested in participating in the course in question.
You can find the offerings of early music studies in the Open University’s course calendar.
