Uniarts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy ranked 25th in Performing Arts in the QS World University Rankings
The QS World University Rankings by Subject has listed the best universities that offer degree programmes in performing arts for the eighth time. Sibelius Academy has been at the top of the list since the first year, the sixth at its best in 2018.
“Our ranking in the top 25 is a great international recognition, with 2,232 performing arts schools from around the world in the category. The result is also valuable to us because, due to our geographical location, the pandemic brought a radical change to our international cooperation and thus to our visibility at the global forefront of music education,” says Sibelius Academy Dean Emilie Gardberg.
The QS assessments are compiled using evaluations made by academic experts and employers. The Sibelius Academy’s ranking dropped slightly from last year (22nd place) as its ratings from employers in the field decreased. The employer reputation indicator is based on employers’ opinions on which institutions produce the most sought-after students of their respective fields. In terms of academic reputation alone, the Sibelius Academy ranked 14th.
“Our placement among the top schools in the world strengthens the appeal and competitiveness of Finnish art education. A strong reputation helps recruite international students and professionals as well as build strategic partnerships globally,” Uniarts Helsinki Rector Kaarlo Hildén says.
The Royal College of Music in London was rated as the best performing arts institution in the world for the second time. The French Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris came in second and the Royal Academy of Music came in third. The Juilliard School in New York, previously ranked the best in the world for many consecutive years, was now fifth.
Among the top ten were also the Austrian Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States, the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Moscow State Conservatory P. I. Tchaikovsky.
The annual QS Quacquarelli Symonds’ field-specific university rankings are based on surveys conducted among university teachers and researchers as well as higher education institutions and employers. Institutions are not allowed to evaluate themselves in the survey. This year, 54 subjects were included in the QS rankings by subject.
