The Sibelius Academy has received a €1 million grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation to implement a four-year project titled Voice and Justice – Music as a Promoter of Diversity between 2025 and 2028. The goal of the project is to strengthen intercultural dialogue and explore how music can serve as a tool for supporting cultural diversity and increase equality.
As part of the project, the Sibelius Academy will carry out four artistic collaborative projects with American partners. Additionally, the initiative includes a four-year research project and teaching visits.
The first collaborative project, Mission Music, will take place in March 2025. It will examine the role of music played at Latin American and Californian mission stations in the 1500s and 1600s, particularly its role in preserving and revitalising indigenous languages. The visit will also include two Mission Music of the Americas concerts, which will be held in Los Angeles and San Gabriel.
At the same time, the four-year research project Investigating the Role of Music in Facilitating Dialogue and Promoting Cultural Understanding will launch. This project will look into music’s ability to foster intercultural understanding and dialogue. The outcome of the project will be an online resource to help teachers and institutions incorporate intercultural dialogue into their teaching and performances.
In March 2025, two Arts Management researchers and five early music students, along with their teacher, will travel to the United States.
