Pacius Fund grants follow-up funding for preparing a master’s programme in musical theatre

The new master’s programme is being planned under the direction of Professor J. Martina Roos.

The Pacius Fund, operating under the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, has granted 80,000 euros in additional follow-up funding to Uniarts Helsinki to support the preparations of a master’s programme in musical theatre.

Uniarts Helsinki aims to launch a master’s programme in musical theatre that would be run jointly by the Sibelius Academy and the Theatre Academy, with the first admission round

planned for 2026. Negotiations for securing external funding for the programme are in the final stages. The content and scope of the programme depend on the funding it will receive, which will be determined in late winter or early spring in 2025.

The funding granted by the Pacius Fund will help in the preparations of the programme’s launch, such as plans for the curriculum. Uniarts Helsinki has already reinforced its educational offerings in musical theatre by establishing a five-year professorship in musical theatre thanks to funding from the Waldemar von Frenckell Foundation. J. Martina Roos was appointed to the position in September. One of Roos’s main duties is to participate in the planning of the master’s programme.

The master’s programme in musical theatre will create educational continuum in the artistic field, because until now, it has only been possible to study for a bachelor’s degree in the field. The programme will deepen the competence of musical theatre professionals and cater to the theatre sector’s need to ambitiously develop the artistic field that is seeing strong growth in its audience numbers.
