Satasarvi – Finnish Journal of Folk Music Research, published by the University of the Arts Helsinki, Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department, provides a forum for folk music research in its broadest sense. The new publication is aimed at promoting the research and discussion of folk music in Finland and internationally, particularly to highlight the perspective of the researching musician. The first issue of Satasarvi will be published on 21 December 2020. In the future, it will be published annually both online and as a printed book.

Satasarvi publishes scientific articles, as well as reviews, speeches, critiques, reports, and doctoral lectiones praecursoriae. Folk music research is broadly defined in the new publication. Satasarvi is happy to publish research on folk dance or folk instruments, as well as research on other phenomena and fields closely related to historical and contemporary folk music. Texts on folk music pedagogy, speeches by teachers and students in the field, case studies, and artistic research articles are also welcome. Articles can be published in Finnish, Swedish, and English.

“Folk music research is currently developing strongly internationally. The Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department has been actively involved in enabling this development by organizing symposia and conferences in cooperation with domestic and international partners. At the MuTri doctoral school, the folk music doctoral seminar currently consists of 18 students, and so far 28 Doctors of Music have graduated. It is great that with Satasarvi, we will finally be able to offer a focused publication forum for folk music research,“ says Kristiina Ilmonen, editor-in-chief of the publication and professor of folk music at the Sibelius Academy.

The first Satasarvi contains seven articles from researchers who presented at the Folk Music Researchers’ Symposium in 2015–2017. The symposium is a regular event organized by the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department together with the Finnish Literature Society (SKS).

The first issue of Satasarvi will be published on the Etno.net online platform, a website hosted by the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. Etno.net publishes materials from teachers, students, artists, and researchers from the department, including research, theses, and teaching materials.
