Kaarlo Hildén appointed as chair of the board of the Finnish Association for Basic Education in the Arts
The Finnish Association for Basic Education in the Arts has selected Uniarts Helsinki’s Rector Kaarlo Hildén as the chair of the board for a two-year term starting on 1 January 2022.
Other members selected to the board are Member of Parliament Anders Adlercreutz, Project Director Kaarina Gould, Cultural Director Samu Forsblom, Chair of the Finnish Association of Art Schools Johanna Kivioja, Chair of the Finnish Association of Institutes of Performing Arts (ETOL) Terhi Perälä and Chair of the Association of Finnish Music Schools Sanna Saarinen.
“Comprehensive schools and upper secondary schools do not provide pupils with all the skills needed in higher education studies in the arts. That is why a well-functioning system for basic education in the arts is fundamental for university-level arts education. Uniarts Helsinki recognises its own responsibility as an education provider that can strengthen the vitality of the arts sector. As the chair of the board of the Association for Basic Education in the Arts, I get to push the entire field forward towards a better future also from the perspective of basic education in the arts,” Kaarlo Hildén commented.
The Association for Basic Education in the Arts is an umbrella organisation for six national associations for basic education in the arts, representing institutions that provide basic education in the arts in the fields of architecture, fine arts, handicraft, media art, music, literary art, circus, dance and theatre. Basic education in the arts is an internationally unique form of education and extracurricular activity aimed especially at children and teenagers. It is part of the Finnish education system and involves about 128,000 pupils around the country.
Kaarlo Hildén is also a member of the board of Sivista, the association of Finnish Education Employers.
