Master’s Programme in Music Business drives Finnish music to the world
The first-of-its-kind master’s programme in Finland equips music creators and industry professionals with the commercial expertise needed to navigate global markets, strengthen export and boost the growth of Finnish music.
The global music industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by technological advancements, changing consumer behaviours, and the globalisation of markets. For the Finnish music industry, with its limited domestic market, the real potential for growth lies in seizing international business opportunities.
“We need skilled professionals who can combine business skills, artistic creativity and strategic insight to meet the evolving demands of the industry. These are individuals capable of navigating the complexities of commercialisation, digital distribution, streaming, rights management, marketing strategies and audience engagement,” says Violeta Simjanovska, head of the master’s programme.
The two-year English-language programme, leading to a Master of Arts (Art and Design) degree, will launch at the Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki in autumn 2025. The application period is 8-22 January 2025.
A comprehensive curriculum
To address the industry’s multifaceted nature, the curriculum will cover music business trends, music production, distribution channels, marketing, branding and export, providing a deeper understanding of the music business ecosystem and audience relationships.
The programme is targeted to Finnish and international musicians, music creators and industry professionals interested in a comprehensive blend of business and artistic education.
“It is ideal for those eager to build a global career in the music business and elevate the profile of Finnish music after graduation,” says Simjanovska.
Students will be prepared to lead and innovate across various sectors of the music industry – in agencies and management offices, record labels and publishing companies, music marketing, export, rights management and event production.
“By promoting sustainability, collaboration, digitalisation and global competitiveness, the programme will foster a culture of innovation and responsible leadership in the sector,” Simjanovska concludes.
Global music industry connections
The programme is rooted in a collaboration with top-tier partners: Music Finland, a renowned expert in music export; the University of Agder in Norway, a leading institution in the field; and esteemed universities from the U.S.
“Music Finland has strong global networks and in-depth expertise in the fundamentals of the music business. By inspiring and training new internationally-oriented professionals, we can strengthen the Finnish music industry,” says Mikko Manninen, executive director of Music Finland.
With strong ties to the industry, the programme emphasises hands-on learning through internships, real-world projects and collaborations with industry professionals.
“Through exposure to international best practices and strategic mentorship, the programme offers students an outstanding opportunity to connect with key global stakeholders and experts, building valuable networks for their future careers,” Simjanovska says.
