Uniarts Helsinki commented on the Government’s proposal to the Parliament regarding amendments to the Universities Act and the Universities of Applied Sciences Act
On Monday, 29 January, Uniarts Helsinki commented on the Government’s proposal to the Parliament regarding amendments to the Universities Act and the Universities of Applied Sciences Act. Among other amendments, the Government proposes raising the annual tuition fees for students coming from outside of the EU/EEA area.
In its comment, Uniarts Helsinki expresses its concern about the likely consequences of the Government’s proposal in regard to teaching in the arts, in particular.
“Charging the full cost of education through annual tuition fees will permanently change the position of especially the degree programmes where a significant share of the students come from outside of the EU/EEA area. A significant change to the annual tuition fee will change the character of these programmes. This will have a direct impact on the Finnish arts scene”, says Uniarts Helsinki’s Vice Rector for Education Marjo Kaartinen.
The universities are in an extremely unequal situation with each other when it comes to charging the full cost of education, and this is reflected especially on a university that focuses solely on teaching in the arts.
