Culture’s vitality must be protected. Uniarts Helsinki endorses the Cut the Cuts! Culture Petition

Art and research build the foundation for the vitality and educated culture of the Finnish society. Major cuts are being targeted at the cultural sector’s funding, which would lead to fewer opportunities to experience art and threaten the very foundation of Finnish culture.

Uniarts Helsinki joins in endorsing the Cut the Cuts! Culture Petition. The Cut the Cutcampaignhas entailed a Great Culture Petition that is open between 1 October and 4 December, and it will culminate in a demonstration on 5 December, when the signed petition will be delivered to the Finnish Government.

Cut the Cuts! demands Finnish policy-makers to cancel the cuts planned for the cultural sector and to safeguard the basic funding for culture even in times of crises. Uniarts Helsinki endorses this message and these goals.

Art reflects the meanings, solace and pain of life. It creates deeper connections between the past, present and future and connects us to each other and the surrounding world in a way that transcends the boundaries of words and clear definitions.

Art is of vital importance, especially when the world around is confusing and chaotic. Even now, the arts are at the core of Finnishness, which is continuously being re-defined. That is why we must defend culture’s vitality and every single person’s right to experience and create art.

The petition has been drawn up by a group of professionals in the arts and cultural sector who are active in Forum Artis (national cooperation organ for Finnish artists’ associations) and the Mitta on täysi working group. The Artists’ Association of Finland is a member of Forum Artis.
